FUCHS LUBRICANTS SOUTH AFRICA reinforces safety culture with ‘Golden Rules’ launch in partnership with KBC Health & Safety

FUCHS LUBRICANTS SOUTH AFRICA has reinforced its commitment to workplace safety with the launch of its “Golden Rules of Safety” during its annual Safety Day, held in partnership with KBC Health & Safety.

The event recognised the company’s Zero Harm achievement in 2025 and unveiled its Golden Rules centred on personal ownership, PPE compliance and safe driving and moving machines. The initiative, with the subject ‘Safety Starts with Me: Every Task, Every Time’, encouraged employees to accept personal responsibility for making the workplace safer and to help co-workers.

“Safety is not simply a policy at FUCHS, it is a core value embedded in how we operate every day”, says Anneline Jairaj, SHEQ MANAGER  at FUCHS. “Our Golden Rules are designed to give every employee ownership of their safety and the safety of others around them. Zero Harm is a significant milestone, but we are committed to maintaining and improving that culture through ongoing awareness and accountability.”

One of the highlights included a motivational talk by former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and Riski Diski ambassador, André Arendse. Developed by KBC Health & Safety, Riski Diski is a soccer-themed, gamified safety training project that employs the language and dynamics of soccer to enhance operational risk management and hazard awareness in high-risk workplaces.

Arendse presented thoughts on resilience, teamwork and personal responsibility, drawing on his professional football experience and using sport as an analogy to explain how individual acts contribute to the collective objective of Zero Harm. The learning experience was enhanced by foosball activities and safety scenarios that included hazard identification, risk assessment, PPE compliance, controls and the Swiss Cheese Model of accident prevention.

“We believe behavioural change is key to effective safety management,” Sian Thurtell, Commercial Director at KBC Health & Safety. “Using experiential and gamified learning approaches, like Riski Diski, is a great way to practically and memorably engage employees to improve risk awareness and decision making in the workplace.”
