Google expands AI investment in Africa

Google has announced a new $5.8 million investment through its Google.org initiative, aimed at enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity training in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.

As part of its commitment to digital inclusion, Google expanded Voice Search, Gboard talk-to-type, and Translate dictation to cover 15 additional African languages, including Somali, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and Swati—reaching an estimated 300 million new users.

This investment will benefit nonprofits and educational institutions, equipping individuals with foundational AI and cybersecurity skills critical for thriving in a digital-driven economy.

Jen Carter, Head of Tech and Volunteering at Google.org, emphasized: “AI can accelerate the work of organizations addressing local challenges, and this funding allows them to create impactful tools for communities across Africa and beyond.”

Alex Okosi, Google Africa Managing Director, noted, “We’ve empowered millions with internet access and digital tools, helping young entrepreneurs and creators to drive regional innovation.”
