The K-Detect-iON flammable gas detector complements Kentec’s energy storage protection solution

Kentec Electronics has announced the launch of its K-Detect-iON calibration-free flammable gas detector to provide rapid detection, robust performance and peace of mind as part of a complete Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) fire protection solution.

Designed to integrate seamlessly with Kentec’s Sigma ZXT extinguishing panels, K-Detect-iON delivers optimal protection by allowing real-time monitoring of often remote energy storage facilities, alongside rapid response in the event of an incident.

The only UL 2075 calibration-free hydrogen sensor currently on the market, K-Detect-iON needs no calibration for at least 10 years – reducing service costs, minimising site disruption and ensuring consistent performance throughout a lengthy lifespan.

Whether deployed in EN or UL environments, the same core technology ensures consistent performance and protection across global markets. Sigma ZXT (EN) Systems comply with EN54 Part 2, EN54 Part 4 and EN12094 Part 1, while Sigma ZXT (UL) Systems (certification pending) comply with UL 864 (10th Edition), FM Standards and NFPA 855 – Energy Storage Protection.

“BESS fire incidents typically follow a predictable sequence, from cell abuse to off-gassing, and finally to thermal runaway and fire. Hydrogen gas is one of the first and most dangerous indicators that this chain reaction is underway – so early and accurate detection of the gas is vital at what are often remote facilities”, says Derrick Hall Director of Sales and Marketing at Kentec.

K-Detect-iON operates at this early warning stage by detecting hydrogen off-gassing well before it reaches the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL). Indeed, a full 0–100% LEL detection range ensures precise monitoring of hydrogen levels from the very earliest trace through to potentially hazardous concentrations.

The fast response time of the K-Detect-iON detector helps minimise the risk of ignition, while a robust design and a wide operating range of -30°C to 75°C (±0.48°C) ensures dependable performance free from false alarms even in the most demanding environments.

When connected as part of a Sigma ZXT system, K-Detect-iON can automatically trigger the operation of extraction vents in BESS units to release built-up hydrogen, reducing explosion risk and stabilising the environment. If needed, and depending on the desired configuration, suppression systems can then be activated, all from one integrated platform.

K-Detect-iON features a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) range of 0 – 500 VOC, has three programmable relay outputs, supports single or multiple sensor configurations and offers Modbus Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) integration via a RS485 connection.
