CFA Launches Groundbreaking Aviation Simulator at VEMTC
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has introduced a pioneering mixed reality fire aviation simulator designed to elevate training for aviation personnel in Victoria. This cutting-edge simulator, which utilizes advanced mixed reality goggles with a 280-degree field of view, provides a secure environment for pilots and aviation staff to enhance their skills.
Unveiled at the Victorian Emergency Management Training Centre (VEMTC) in Bangholme, the simulator launch was attended by Emergency Services Minister Jaclyn Symes, CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan, and FFMVic Deputy Chief Fire Officer Fiona Dunstan. The $640,000 project was co-funded by the CFA and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA).
Development of the Simulator
The aviation simulator project began during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, with CFA Aviation Commander John Katakouzinos AFSM creating a prototype trailer in his garage. This prototype has been widely used by aviation teams across Victoria. Following the success of the initial version, the need for a permanent simulator became evident.
The simulator allows aviation volunteers and staff to practice mapping, air attack missions, aircraft coordination, and communication in a simulated environment, providing comprehensive training opportunities.
Improving Fire Aviation Training in Victoria
Equipped with photorealistic mapping software and communication systems, the simulator replicates the interior of an aircraft, offering users a realistic flight experience. It can be programmed for a range of scenarios using any aircraft deployed for aerial firefighting in Australia. Additionally, it can re-enact past operations for pre-season training, making it a highly versatile tool for aviation personnel.
